The defense sought to cast doubt on the identity of the body pulled from the river. They said it could not be positively identified, and they questioned whether Till was dead at all. The defense also asserted that although Bryant and Milam had taken Till from his great-uncle’s house, they had released him that night. The defense attorneys attempted to prove that Mose Wright—who was addressed as “Uncle Mose" by the prosecution and “Mose" by the defense—could not identify Bryant and Milam as the men who took Till from his cabin.

Till was struck above the right ear; Bryant and Milam then attached the seventy-four-pound cotton gin fan to Till’s neck with barbed wire and rolled him into the Tallahatchie River. As one of Till’s cousins ran in to pull him out of the store, Bryant exited through the front door to retrieve a pistol out of her sister-in-law’s car. Carolyn Bryant testified at trial that as she crossed the road, Till “wolf-whistled” at her, a detail which Till’s cousins who were present with him at Bryant’s vehemently denied. I had read stories before about the lynching of black folks in Mississippi and other areas of the Deep South. I’d even heard my relatives tell the story of a lynching in downtown Little Rock.

At the time of Emmett’s murder in 1955, Emmett’s mother was often referred to by using her second husband’s name as, Mamie Till Bradley. In 1957, she married Gene Mobley and then became known as Mamie Till Mobley. The memoir had been prepared by Donham’s daughter-in-law Marsha Bryant, who had shared the material with Timothy Tyson. Tyson placed the memoir at the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill library archives with access restricted for 20 years or until the death of Donham.

Tell will explain how and why Till’s story was buried for 49 years before roaring back to life in the twenty-first century. Tell will account for long silences as well as brief, passionate outbursts of memorial investment. He will tell the backstories of the signs and museums that now punctuate the land where Till was killed.
